WHO NEEDS TEETH WHITENING?

Teeth discoloration is unattractive, and can add years to your appearance.

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure, and works best for people who have healthy teeth with no fillings and healthy gums.

Teeth WhiteningMany adults have become self conscious about their stained, yellow teeth. This discoloration or stain can be brought on from smoking, drinking black coffee, tea, or colas.

Some medications can also cause tooth discoloration. These people will usually be so self-conscious that they will cover their smile by holding their hand over their mouth or by smiling with their mouth closed. If this describes your experience, perhaps it’s time to consider having your teeth whitened.

DO I NEED TO SEE A DENTIST?

It is wise to see your dentist before you start any over-the-counter procedure. Depending on how long you have accumulated stain, a dentist may recommend a simple at-home method or a more professional procedure.

CAN I START WHITENING MY TEETH AT HOME WITH A NATURAL REMEDY?

LEMON JUICE can lighten stains on the teeth, but should be used sparingly because lemon juice can damage enamel on the teeth.

Eating RAW CARROTS, APPLES or CELERY can help to erase some stains on the teeth.

Some people have tried brushing their teeth with BAKING SODA, which can be an effective teeth whitener. However, baking soda can damage tooth enamel if used too often.

WHAT CAN I PURCHASE OVER-THE-COUNTER TO HELP MY TEETH?

Many TOOTHPASTES have added various chemicals that are known to whiten or lighten teeth. Some of these are medicated. Read the labels carefully to be sure that you can use the toothpaste once or twice a day without damaging your teeth.

WHITENING RINSES are easy and can be swished around in your mouth, similar to a mouth wash. They usually contain hydrogen peroxide, which is the whitening agent, and it could take several weeks before you see any results.

WHITENING STRIPS are thin and invisible and coated with a peroxide-based gel. They should be applied over the teeth twice daily for two weeks. The gel works on the stains on the surface of the tooth enamel.

WHITENING GELS are peroxide-based and applied to the teeth with a small brush. This should be done twice a day for two weeks. This procedure will last for about four months, similar to the whitening strips.

WHAT TEETH WHITENING PROCEDURES ARE DONE BY THE DENTIST?

WHITENING IN THE OFFICE or IN-OFFICE BLEACHING can be done with heat, a special light, and possibly a laser. The whitening product is applied directly to the teeth, and results can be seen in one thirty to sixty minute treatment. This type of whitening is the most expensive and requires several appointments.

PEROXIDE GELS involve filling a tray with a gel whitening solution which contains a peroxide bleaching agent. The dentist paints the gums with a solution that protects them from chemical burns. The tray stays on the teeth anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes a day. In some cases, the tray is worn a couple of hours a day to every day during the night for up to four weeks. Within two or three treatments, the teeth can become whiter.

POWER BLEACHING or LIGHT ACCELERATED BLEACHING is using halogen light to speed up the work of the peroxide gel. This treatment combines bleaching with the light, and patients can see improvement on their teeth in as short a period as thirty minutes to one hour.

WHAT TEETH WHITENING PROCEDURE IS BEST FOR YOU?

Many people will try an over-the-counter remedy and do teeth whitening at home. However, if that doesn’t work for you, then be sure to see your dentist.  He may recommend veneers or crowns, depending on the condition or your teeth.

Prices will vary on teeth whitening from a dentist depending on where you live, the teeth whitening procedure you need or select, and the specialist that you choose. It is important to check with your insurance company to see how much coverage is provided for your procedure.
